Participatory media campaign on road safety and road safety laws in Tanzania, Phase II

FADECO is the acronym of Family Alliance for Development and Cooperation, a local NGO. FADECO’s mission is “working for sustainable development of the grassroots communities to alleviate poverty and improve standards of living”. FADECO Community Radio (FRC 100.8 FM) is located in Karagwe/Kagera Region (Northwest Tanzania), and became operational in 2007. FADECO Community Radio is intended to be used by the community in Karagwe, to effect sustainable rural socio-economic development. Preliminary Partnership with Stem van Afrika
This project is the fourth cooperation with Stem van Afrika. The first (2009/2010) targeted Albinos in the Kagera Region. In 2012, the project “Sensitization Programmes for People with Disabilities” was supported. And, from September 2016 to December 2017, the project “Participatory community media campaign in schools by empowering journalists with knowledge about road safety and traffic laws in Tanzania” was implemented, Phase I.
Project Objective
To further train journalists on packaging road safety issues on the radio, towards realising a behaviour change among road users.To mainstream the issue of road safety among local media (radios) in Kagera region. To further train school teachers on how to deliver road safety measures. To provide media training for selected traffic police officers.
Activities
- Baseline Research
- Two training sessions with 30 participants each in Ngara. Refresher training for radio stations of Phase I and training from scratch for the additional stations involved in Phase II
- One training session for sixteen traffic police officers (two per district) for three days in Bukoba
- Road safety training (two days) for school teachers. In total for 200 teachers (25 from each of the eight districts)
- Production of Campaign Material (reflective jackets, road signs,…)
- Participation in national road safety campaigns
- Production of radio content on road safety and post-accident care
